As the world marks Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, six-year-old Leo Karkauskas is today on a steady path to recovery, thanks to the support of Al Jalila Foundation, which covered the cost of his cancer treatment through its A’awen program. He has returned to the activities he loves, including swimming and playing the drums, surrounded by the continued support of his family.
Leo’s story began in February 2025, when his family noticed several concerning symptoms, including bruises appearing across his body, dry lips, loss of appetite, and unusual fatigue. After initial blood tests confirmed a suspected diagnosis of leukemia, Leo was brought to Al Jalila Children’s Hospital, where further tests confirmed he had T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He was admitted directly to the Intensive Care Unit, where he remained for approximately one week.
Dr. Hani Humad, Consultant in Pediatric Hematology at Al Jalila Children’s Hospital, said: “Leo’s white blood cell count was extremely high when he arrived. Thanks to the swift intervention of our multidisciplinary team, we were able to stabilize him and begin the intensive chemotherapy protocol he needed.”
He added: “Leo responded exceptionally well to treatment. By day 33, a bone marrow test confirmed that his cancer was in remission. He is now in the maintenance phase of treatment, which will continue until March 2027”.
Continuity of Care
Leo’s family faced significant hardships beyond his medical condition. They turned to Al Jalila Foundation for support, which covered the cost of Leo’s care and provided support to him and his family.

Leo began treatment in March 2025. The intensive phase included chemotherapy, blood and platelet transfusions, and management of complications. Throughout his journey, he received comprehensive care from a multidisciplinary team across hematology, oncology, and pediatrics at the hospital.
Leo’s mother said: “Al Jalila Foundation took full responsibility for his care. The team in Al Jalila Children’s Hospital treated him as their own. They saved my little boy’s life, and for that I will be forever grateful.”
She added: “To any family going through this journey, never lose hope. Even in the most difficult moments, look for the small miracles happening around you. Be brave, be strong, and find joy in the little things. Your child needs to see you hopeful.”
Today, Leo is doing remarkably well. He has regained his energy and joy, and continues to thrive with regular follow-up appointments at the hospital he now calls home.
