Al Jalila Foundation and Dubai SME, the agency of the Department of Economic Development (DED) in Dubai mandated to develop the small and medium enterprise (SME) sector, have signed a partnership agreement to launch Al Jalila Foundation Healthcare Innovation Center (in2Hc), the UAE first healthcare incubator.

The in2Hc (read as: into healthcare) initiative is in response to the call of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai to observe 22-28 November 2015 as the National Innovation Week.

The in2Hc aims to enable aspiring Emirati doctors from a number of medical specialties to start-up their business enterprise in healthcare by providing them with the required resources and support- including facilities, funding and mentoring. The outcome of this initiative will be successful Emirati entrepreneurs who will transform healthcare in the UAE through their innovative contributions and services.

The agreement was signed by Abdul Baset Al Janahi, CEO of Dubai SME, and Dr. Abdulkareem Sultan Al Olama, CEO of Al Jalila Foundation.

“This quality initiative aims to expand the network of business incubators through the support of business leaders in various fields, especially the medical field. We are pleased to be partners with Al Jalila Foundation in strengthening the competencies of our national cadre in the healthcare sector. Our collaboration will see the Hamdan Innovation Incubator providing resources and opportunities for pilot projects and innovative ideas of young and entrepreneurial UAE nationals,”

Al Janahi added that this partnership will strengthen the entrepreneurial culture in Dubai and enable UAE national doctors establish their own businesses, thereby helping the country achieve its vision and strategy of developing and upgrading SMEs to the top position in the economic, social and cultural spheres.

The fourth edition of the 7EmiratesRun kicked off today under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Sports Council. The run began at the Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan hotel by Rotana in Abu Dhabi, which organised a number of community fundraising activities leading up to the start of the cross-country event. The 575 kilometre, 12-day charity run is being held in honour of the 44th UAE National Day and will conclude in Dubai on 2 December 2015 and aims to raise AED 777 thousand to ‘get children back on their feet’ through prosthetic support.

In line with its vision to position the UAE at the forefront of global innovation Al Jalila Foundation will support the UAE’s brightest young minds to pursue research. The Dubai-based foundation will sponsor a scholarship program [Master of Medical Sciences degree in Global Health Delivery] at Harvard Medical School as part of its efforts to encourage medical professionals to pursue training in global health delivery to contribute to the nation’s quality of healthcare.

The two-year Master of Medical Sciences in Global Health Delivery is a post-graduate training program focused on the ‘last mile’ of health care delivery and the optimization of treatment outcomes. The program includes a HMS-based curriculum followed by a 9-month mentored research project in the UAE.

Al Jalila Foundation, the global philanthropic organisation dedicated to transforming lives through medical education and research, announced today that it is developing a AED 32 million endowment to generate revenue to fund biomedical research. The six-floor residential building, ‘Al Warqa’a Endowment’, aims to create a 12% return to support local research into some of the UAE’s most pressing health problems.

Al Warqa’a Endowment will provide Al Jalila Foundation with a sustainable income, whilst giving donors the opportunity to contribute to a national philanthropic project to support the advancement of health in the UAE.”

The building, which is named after the Al Warqa’a area in Dubai, will be built on land granted by the Government of Dubai with construction expected to start in December 2015, and a projected completion date of March 2017. Designed by Arif & Bintoak Consulting Architects and Engineers, it will consist of 60 one and two-bedroom apartments and will house a number of retail outlets and amenities on the ground floor.

The AED 32 million value of the development has been divided into 32,000 shares valued at AED 1,000 with the first 200 shares issued to an anonymous Emirati businessman and philanthropist. Al Jalila Foundation will own the building and expects to generate a rental yield of 12 percent per annum.

Al Jalila Foundation, the global philanthropic organisation dedicated to transforming lives through medical education and research, has [today] announced a new programme, ‘Ana Asma’a’ (‘I hear’ in Arabic). Ana Asma’a is part of A’awen, Al Jalila Foundation’s treatment support programme, which will provide children in the UAE who suffer severe hearing loss with cutting-edge cochlear implants to restore hearing.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), hearing impairment affects 360 million people globally (or 5% of the world’s population) and 32 million children under the age of 15. In the Middle East, hearing loss is one of the region’s top five health problems, estimated to affect 1 in 25 people. The condition mostly affects children from birth; other cases are a result of infections, injury or even from excessive noise. Studies show that loss of hearing has devastating consequences for interpersonal communication, psychosocial well-being, quality of life and economic independence; and early intervention is integral for the best chance of recovery.

The cochlear implant technology helps restore hearing using an electronic medical device implant that does the work of damaged parts of the inner ear (cochlea) to provide sound signals to the brain. The procedure is highly effective with young children as the early stages of brain development maximise the child’s ability to develop speech, language and listening skills, ultimately providing a greater chance of a normal life.

A’awen (‘support’ in Arabic), Al Jalila Foundation’s medical support programme, complements the Foundation’s investments in medical education and research. Through A’awen, Al Jalila Foundation works directly with healthcare partners in the UAE to offer financial aid to UAE-based patients without access to quality healthcare. So far Al Jalila Foundation has invested almost AED 5 million to provide specialised treatments to over 60 patients including hearing aids, chemotherapy for various types of cancer, cochlear implants, knee replacements, prosthetics, cardiovascular treatment (heart failure), dialysis treatment (kidney failure), and ophthalmology/cornea transplants among others.

Ana Asma’a has already transformed lives by providing children with the fundamental ability to hear, and enabling them to live independent and happy lives. In 2014, Al Jalila Foundation sponsored the treatment of a two year old girl, Hanah Sarmiento, who underwent a bilateral cochlear implant at hearLIFE Clinic, one of Al Jalila Foundation’s healthcare partners.

Hanah’s parents, Alvin and Analyn Sarmiento, have said the intervention of Al Jalila Foundation has given their daughter a brighter future, and said Hanah’s recovery is a “miracle”.

The partnership will support initiatives like Ta’alouf, Al Jalila Foundation’s flagship six-month training course which equips the teachers and principals with the skills needed to support their students with special needs, and is run in partnership with Zayed University. In June 2015 the foundation celebrated the graduation of the first 63 teachers and principals to successfully complete the course, with more courses set to run later in the year. The programme has played an important role in enhancing the education of children with disabilities and enabling them to become productive members in their community

The Ministry of Education will also work with Al Jalila Foundation to inspire Emirati students to pursue careers in medicine through events like Destination Medicine, a student conference featuring talks from medical professionals and interactive workshops. This year the event was attended by more than 330 Emirati students aged 11-13 from 21 schools across the UAE who learnt about first aid, sports medicine, nursing, and medical robotics.

Both Al Jalila Foundation and the Ministry of Education will work together to support the UAE’s aim to build a knowledge-based, highly productive and competitive economy, that is developed with accessible and high-quality education and healthcare. Al Jalila Foundation, a global philanthropic organisation dedicated to transforming lives through medical education and research, today celebrated the graduation of 63 teachers and 66 parents from its flagship programme Ta’alouf (‘harmony’ in Arabic), which provides carers of children with special needs with life-changing skills to help them lead more productive and happier lives.

The ceremony was inaugurated by Her Excellency Dr Raja Easa Saleh Al Gurg, Member of the Board of Trustees and Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Al Jalila Foundation. Dr Abdulkareem Sultan Al Olama, CEO of Al Jalila Foundation; Professor Reyadh Al Mehaideb, Vice President of Zayed University; Professor Abdullah Alshamsi, Vice Chancellor of The British University in Dubai (BUiD); and Professor Eman Gaad, Dean of Faculty of Education and the Head of the Doctoral Programme at BUiD, also joined the proceedings that took place at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Academic Medical Centre in Dubai Healthcare City.

Her Excellency Dr Raja Al Gurg commented on the programme:

“Every child has something to contribute to the world, if we give them the chance. At the heart of Ta’alouf is social inclusion and we will continue to champion it in our classrooms, our playgrounds and our communities. ”

The milestone graduation ceremony marked the first cohort of teachers and principals, hailing from 22 private and government schools in Dubai, to have successfully completed the six-month training course. The teacher training programme was established in partnership with Zayed University and supported by the Ministry of Education and the Knowledge and Human Development Authority.

The ceremony also celebrated the fifth and sixth cohort of parents to complete the Ta’alouf parents training programme, bringing the total number of graduated parents to 266 since inception in October 2013. The six-week course has been taught in both English and Arabic to participants from 19 different nationalities across the UAE. So far Al Jalila Foundation has invested more than AED 3 million in its Ta’alouf programme, which has benefited a huge cross-section of the special needs community, including 266 families living with Autism, Down Syndrome and other developmental delays. It was the first time that the course was delivered outside of Dubai – in Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah – to accommodate a larger number of parents in the UAE.

Dr Abdulkareem added:

“At Al Jalila Foundation, we are committed to delivering the most effective educational programme for carers of children with special needs. The number of participants who we have been able to reach out to hasincreased five-fold since the programme started in 2013. We are proud to have had the opportunity to empower these parents and teachers by providing them with life-changing skills to ensure a continuum of care between the child’s home and school.”

“Through our work with Al Jalila Foundation in the Ta’alouf programme, Zayed University looks forward to making lasting and significant contributions in all areas that serve individual learning experiences, and broaden and enrich educational practices catering to student’s needs.”

Vice Principal of Anisa Al Ansaria School, Fathela Al Sayyed Hussein, and Ashraf Mohammed Shahin, father of four-year-old Ruqaya who has Autism, gave heartfelt testimonials of their experience. Both parent and teacherpraised Al Jalila Foundation for giving them the opportunity to attend the Ta’alouf training course and explained how it had enriched their understanding of special needs and international best practices.

Sponsored by Total, and in partnership with the Ministry of Education and the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, the event was held at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Academic Medical Centre, in Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC), and attended by 330 Emirati students aged 11-13 from 21 schools across the UAE.Catering for the event was provided by Abela& Co.
