“My daughter saved my life”

Amina Ali AlMheiri and her husband, were eagerly awaiting the arrival of their first child. They had planned everything meticulously, from the colour of the nursery to the clothes her baby would wear leaving the hospital. However, things did not go as planned when she went into labour on Christmas Day. “I was supposed to give birth in January 2021, but my baby girl was in a hurry to meet us,” said Amina recalling the experience. As she underwent the caesarian operation, the doctors discovered something alarming. She had stage three cancerous tumor on her right ovary.

Amina was devastated. She had never imagined that cancer would be a part of her life, let alone while giving birth to her child. She felt like her world had come crashing down. “It was shocking, but I had a lot of support from my family and friends,” said Amina. In the weeks following this discovery, Amina underwent rigorous treatment for her cancer all while taking care of her newborn baby, Faya.

Despite the difficulties, Amina refused to give up. She remained positive throughout her journey, finding solace in her family, friends, and newfound motherhood. “I was so blessed to become a mother before I lost fertility. The very existence of Faya helped me fight through this. I mean, who wouldn’t fight to stay and stare at this adorable smile?”

Today, Amina is a proud mother, cancer survivor, member and volunteer of Majlis Al Amal and has pledged to help women on their cancer journey. “I really wish I had known about Majlis Al Amal earlier in my diagnosis. It’s a serene space for patients, focusing on mental, physical, and emotional health. It’s fantastic that Majlis Al Amal offers these spaces so we can help others – and each other! It’s truly a feel-good place for people to do good and feel good. When you visit the center, you go home with the greatest reward: putting a smile on a survivors’ face.”
Despite her health challenges Amina “lives every day to its fullest”. She loves scuba diving and is in the process of getting her PADI license as a professional diver.

Amina decided to share her story to help break stereotypes, taboos and create awareness. She can not stress the importance of getting screened, even for those following a healthy lifestyle. Her inspiring story is a reminder that cancer can happen to anyone, at any time, and that early detection saves lives.

Latifa bint Mohammed visits Majlis Al Amal, the UAE’s first cancer drop-in centre established by Al Jalila Foundation

Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), Member of the Dubai Council and Member of the Board of Trustees of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives, visited Majlis Al Amal, the UAE’s first cancer drop-in centre, established by Al Jalila Foundation. Majlis Al Amal is the first community centre of its kind that provides a home away from home’ for female cancer patients and survivors.

Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed was welcomed at the offices of Al Jalila Foundation by Her Excellency Dr. Raja Easa Al Gurg, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Foundation, and Dr. Abdulkareem Sultan Al Olama, CEO of the Foundation. Her Highness was briefed about the organisation’s healthcare programmes transforming patients’ lives. She was also briefed on the progress of the project to build ‘Hamdan Bin Rashid Cancer Charity Hospital’, the UAE’s first cancer charity hospital, being developed by Al Jalila Foundation with the mission of redefining cancer care in the region.

Her Highness toured Majlis Al Amal where cancer patients can drop in anytime for information, take part in art workshops, and attend educational sessions conducted by medical experts. The centre features several other activities designed to enhance the wellbeing of its members. The services of the centre are offered free of charge by volunteers passionate about making a difference to the lives of women affected by cancer. Less than a year since opening its doors, Majlis Al Amal has developed into a 400-strong community of women with cancer. The centre’s members come from all backgrounds united in their mission – to beat cancer.

During her visit, which supports international breast cancer awareness month being marked in October, HH Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed commended the Foundation’s various teams that work behind its programmes. Her Highness met with women who know first-hand the realities of cancer and its impact on their lives and that of their families, friends and their community.

Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed said: “Al Jalila Foundation’s philanthropic medical initiatives have brought significant benefits to the community. Majlis Al Amal is one of the Foundation’s exceptional programmes that supports the physical and mental well-being of female cancer patients and survivors. It was very inspiring to meet and hear the incredible stories of some of the strong women who have found a sense of community and belonging in Majlis Al Amal. I look forward to the continued positive impact of the Foundation’s medical, education, support, and research programmes on people’s lives.”

Dr. Raja Easa Al Gurg said: “Majlis Al Amal supports cancer patients and survivors as they navigate the disease and its challenges. A cancer diagnosis has significant impact psychologically and emotionally and knowing that ‘you are not alone’ and that there is a community to lean on has a huge impact on the wellbeing of patients and their loved ones. Al Jalila Foundation aims to provide a support network in a safe, nurturing environment to women coping with the disease. The centre aims to keep the message of hope alive and improve the wellbeing of women during a very difficult time in their life.”

Dr. Abdulkareem Sultan Al Olama, CEO of Al Jalila Foundation, said: “Studies show that emotional support is integral in the healing journey and Majlis Al Amal provides a platform where women can speak openly about their fears, share experiences and lean on each other for comfort and support that they may otherwise not find outside of the ‘cancer community’.  When we established Majlis Al Amal we knew it would be a very special place for women but we never imagined how much our members would come to depend on their new ‘circle of hope’. We are inspired by their stories and it is a privilege for my team and I to be a small part of their journey.”

“All the services and activities are designed to inspire, nurture and support women as they navigate their cancer journey. We are proud to have created this unique, life-changing community service in the UAE for the first time,” concluded Dr. Abdulkareem Sultan Al Olama.

Since inception in 2013, Al Jalila Foundation has extended AED10 million worth of support to 168 women with cancer unable to afford quality medical care, through its A’awen programme.  One in six patients supported by Al Jalila Foundation have cancer. With the rising incidence of cancer and the consequent need for charity support for patients, Al Jalila Foundation is establishing ‘Hamdan Bin Rashid Cancer Charity Hospital’, the first comprehensive cancer charity hospital in the UAE, which brings together leading experts to manage prevention, diagnosis and treatment under one roof. The hospital is set to open in 2026 with a vision to redefine cancer care in the region.

Pioneering breast cancer research gives hope

In the UAE, breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women and constitutes around 40% of all female cancers. In addition to the rising incidence, another cause for concern is the advanced stage at presentation with the majority of women in the UAE diagnosed under the age of 40 with advanced stage of breast cancer.

To tackle this important issue, Al Jalila Foundation awarded a research grant to Professor Rifat Hamoudi from the University of Sharjah with the aim to understand ‘the role HER2, Estrogen and Progesterone receptors and PI3 kinase in breast cancer pathogenesis to provide deeper understanding of how the interplay of those biomarkers can initiate breast cancer and later lead to more aggressive forms of breast cancer in patients’. Understanding the underlying mechanism, pathogenesis can potentially discover therapies that can prevent the progression of the disease.

The study developed a pioneering technique by merging methods from classical pathology, molecular biology, mathematics, computer science and advanced bioinformatics to understand the role of progesterone receptor on breast cancer pathogenesis.

In summary, the research project led to the identification of various diagnostic, prognostic and potentially therapeutic biomarkers for breast cancer, facilitating the development and implementation of personalised medicine including prevention, early diagnosis and targeted combination therapy approaches giving hope to patients.

Mother helps son with autism realise his full potential

According to the World Health Organization an estimated one in 160 children worldwide has an autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

To support families of children with autism in the UAE, Al Jalila Foundation’s Ta’alouf Parents Training program equips parents with the best possible tools to nurture their children of determination.

Iman, mother of 13-year-old Mohamad who has autism, attended Ta’alouf training in 2019 as she was eager to support her son to live to his full potential.

The program was able to offer her great insights on how best to communicate with her son and how to solve the problems that parents face with autistic children. Positive behaviour in education, skill development and self-protection were some of the key discussions and lectures from the program that Iman was able to apply in her family’s everyday life.

Iman cannot recommend the program enough, “The Ta’alouf program was inspiring. It provided new strategies which I was able to apply daily to support my son to flourish. Through the program, I learned a lot, and it gave me immense hope to focus on my child’s abilities and strengths.”

To date, Al Jalila Foundation has trained 521 parents and families of children with autism.

Muhammad has a second chance at life

In May 2018, 2½ year old Muhammad was diagnosed with acute blood cancer (leukemia). Muhammad’s parents were devastated to learn of their toddler’s diagnosis and although there was hope that the disease was treatable, the family’s medical insurance was insufficient to cover the cost. More funds were needed to undergo Muhammad’s full medical plan and his parents were steadfast in their commitment to provide the best possible treatment for their son.

Undeterred by circumstance, his parents reached out to various channels for support and with the help of Al Jalila Foundation the case was supported by long standing partner, Federal Authority for Government Human Resources (FAHR) who lead a company-wide fundraising campaign to raise the much-needed funds to facilitate Muhammad’s lifesaving treatment.

Muhammad’s parents are filled with appreciation, “We cannot express enough how grateful and respectful we are of the UAE community. At a time when we were losing hope and needed help, our community lifted us up and pulled together to save our son. We are forever grateful.”

With the generosity and support of donors and his incredible medical team, today, 6-year-old Muhammad is in remission. He is a happy, energetic young boy who received a second chance.

Deutsche Bank empowers children of determination

Through its global ‘Born to Be’ youth engagement programme, Deutsche Bank’s Middle East Foundation is continuously working to change the lives and prospects of the next generation in the region. Because every young person deserves the chance to become who they were born to be.

As part of this initiative, Deutsche Bank supported the 8th cohort of Ta’alouf Teachers Training program by Al Jalila Foundation, equipping 65 teachers in the UAE with the necessary skills to empower children of determination in their classrooms.

The Ta’alouf program was born out of the principle that every child, no matter their ability, has enormous potential and it must be channeled to empower the child to live a happy and productive life regardless of their abilities.

Our CEO Dr Abdulkareem Al Olama was delighted to welcome Loïc Voide, Deutsche Bank Co-CEO of Middle East and Africa and Chairman of Deutsche Bank Middle East Foundation, to Al Jalila Foundation to have their name engraved on Bassmat Rashid Bin Saeed donor recognition wall alongside fellow champions of hope.

Deutsche Bank is a wonderful example of how multinational corporations can make a positive impact by joining forces with a local non-profit to transform lives in the community.
