In line with its vision to position the UAE at the forefront of global innovation Al Jalila Foundation will support the UAE’s brightest young minds to pursue research. The Dubai-based foundation will sponsor a scholarship program [Master of Medical Sciences degree in Global Health Delivery] at Harvard Medical School as part of its efforts to encourage medical professionals to pursue training in global health delivery to contribute to the nation’s quality of healthcare.

The two-year Master of Medical Sciences in Global Health Delivery is a post-graduate training program focused on the ‘last mile’ of health care delivery and the optimization of treatment outcomes. The program includes a HMS-based curriculum followed by a 9-month mentored research project in the UAE.

Al Jalila Foundation, the global philanthropic organisation dedicated to transforming lives through medical education and research, announced today that it is developing a AED 32 million endowment to generate revenue to fund biomedical research. The six-floor residential building, ‘Al Warqa’a Endowment’, aims to create a 12% return to support local research into some of the UAE’s most pressing health problems.

“Since inception two years ago, Al Jalila Foundation has been continuously highlighting the critical need for local research to improve lives and looking for innovative financial models to support our vision to position the UAE at the forefront of global medical innovation. World-class medical care depends on vital medical research and requires significant financial support over the long-term. Al Warqa’a Endowment will provide Al Jalila Foundation with a sustainable income, whilst giving donors the opportunity to contribute to a national philanthropic project to support the advancement of health in the UAE.”

The building, which is named after the Al Warqa’a area in Dubai, will be built on land granted by the Government of Dubai with construction expected to start in December 2015, and a projected completion date of March 2017. Designed by Arif & Bintoak Consulting Architects and Engineers, it will consist of 60 one and two-bedroom apartments and will house a number of retail outlets and amenities on the ground floor.

The AED 32 million value of the development has been divided into 32,000 shares valued at AED 1,000 with the first 200 shares issued to an anonymous Emirati businessman and philanthropist. Al Jalila Foundation will own the building and expects to generate a rental yield of 12 percent per annum.

Al Jalila Foundation, the global philanthropic organisation dedicated to transforming lives through medical education and research, has [today] announced a new programme, ‘Ana Asma’a’ (‘I hear’ in Arabic). Ana Asma’a is part of A’awen, Al Jalila Foundation’s treatment support programme, which will provide children in the UAE who suffer severe hearing loss with cutting-edge cochlear implants to restore hearing.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), hearing impairment affects 360 million people globally (or 5% of the world’s population) and 32 million children under the age of 15. In the Middle East, hearing loss is one of the region’s top five health problems, estimated to affect 1 in 25 people. The condition mostly affects children from birth; other cases are a result of infections, injury or even from excessive noise. Studies show that loss of hearing has devastating consequences for interpersonal communication, psychosocial well-being, quality of life and economic independence; and early intervention is integral for the best chance of recovery.

The cochlear implant technology helps restore hearing using an electronic medical device implant that does the work of damaged parts of the inner ear (cochlea) to provide sound signals to the brain. The procedure is highly effective with young children as the early stages of brain development maximise the child’s ability to develop speech, language and listening skills, ultimately providing a greater chance of a normal life.

A’awen (‘support’ in Arabic), Al Jalila Foundation’s medical support programme, complements the Foundation’s investments in medical education and research. Through A’awen, Al Jalila Foundation works directly with healthcare partners in the UAE to offer financial aid to UAE-based patients without access to quality healthcare. So far Al Jalila Foundation has invested almost AED 5 million to provide specialised treatments to over 60 patients including hearing aids, chemotherapy for various types of cancer, cochlear implants, knee replacements, prosthetics, cardiovascular treatment (heart failure), dialysis treatment (kidney failure), and ophthalmology/cornea transplants among others.

Ana Asma’a has already transformed lives by providing children with the fundamental ability to hear, and enabling them to live independent and happy lives. In 2014, Al Jalila Foundation sponsored the treatment of a two year old girl, Hanah Sarmiento, who underwent a bilateral cochlear implant at hearLIFE Clinic, one of Al Jalila Foundation’s healthcare partners.

Hanah’s parents, Alvin and Analyn Sarmiento, have said the intervention of Al Jalila Foundation has given their daughter a brighter future, and said Hanah’s recovery is a “miracle”.

Al Jalila Foundation, a global philanthropic organisation dedicated to transforming lives through medical education and research, has today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Education covering a number of initiatives that achieve both organisation’s objectives; to inspire students to pursue careers in medicine; encourage scientific innovation in schools; and promote inclusive education across schools in the UAE by educating the teachers of students with special needs.

The MoU was signed by His Excellency Marwan Al Sawaleh, Undersecretary, Ministry of Education, and Dr Abdulkareem Al Olama, CEO of Al Jalila Foundation, and attended by a number of officials from both organisations.

The partnership will support initiatives like Ta’alouf, Al Jalila Foundation’s flagship six-month training course which equips the teachers and principals with the skills needed to support their students with special needs, and is run in partnership with Zayed University. In June 2015 the foundation celebrated the graduation of the first 63 teachers and principals to successfully complete the course, with more courses set to run later in the year. The programme has played an important role in enhancing the education of children with disabilities and enabling them to become productive members in their community

The Ministry of Education will also work with Al Jalila Foundation to inspire Emirati students to pursue careers in medicine through events like Destination Medicine, a student conference featuring talks from medical professionals and interactive workshops. This year the event was attended by more than 330 Emirati students aged 11-13 from 21 schools across the UAE who learnt about first aid, sports medicine, nursing, and medical robotics.

Both Al Jalila Foundation and the Ministry of Education will work together to support the UAE’s aim to build a knowledge-based, highly productive and competitive economy, that is developed with accessible and high-quality education and healthcare. The partnership will play an important role in furthering both organisations’ strategic objectives and enable them to work over the long-term to support each other.

Al Jalila Foundation, a global philanthropic organisation dedicated to transforming lives through medical education and research, today celebrated the graduation of 63 teachers and 66 parents from its flagship programme Ta’alouf (‘harmony’ in Arabic), which provides carers of children with special needs with life-changing skills to help them lead more productive and happier lives.

The ceremony was inaugurated by Her Excellency Dr Raja Easa Saleh Al Gurg, Member of the Board of Trustees and Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Al Jalila Foundation. Dr Abdulkareem Sultan Al Olama, CEO of Al Jalila Foundation; Professor Reyadh Al Mehaideb, Vice President of Zayed University; Professor Abdullah Alshamsi, Vice Chancellor of The British University in Dubai (BUiD); and Professor Eman Gaad, Dean of Faculty of Education and the Head of the Doctoral Programme at BUiD, also joined the proceedings that took place at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Academic Medical Centre in Dubai Healthcare City.

Her Excellency Dr Raja Al Gurg commented on the programme:

“Every child has something to contribute to the world, if we give them the chance. At the heart of Ta’alouf is social inclusion and we will continue to champion it in our classrooms, our playgrounds and our communities. ”

The milestone graduation ceremony marked the first cohort of teachers and principals, hailing from 22 private and government schools in Dubai, to have successfully completed the six-month training course. The teacher training programme was established in partnership with Zayed University and supported by the Ministry of Education and the Knowledge and Human Development Authority.

The ceremony also celebrated the fifth and sixth cohort of parents to complete the Ta’alouf parents training programme, bringing the total number of graduated parents to 266 since inception in October 2013. The six-week course has been taught in both English and Arabic to participants from 19 different nationalities across the UAE. So far Al Jalila Foundation has invested more than AED 3 million in its Ta’alouf programme, which has benefited a huge cross-section of the special needs community, including 266 families living with Autism, Down Syndrome and other developmental delays. It was the first time that the course was delivered outside of Dubai – in Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah – to accommodate a larger number of parents in the UAE.

Dr Abdulkareem added:

“At Al Jalila Foundation, we are committed to delivering the most effective educational programme for carers of children with special needs. The number of participants who we have been able to reach out to hasincreased five-fold since the programme started in 2013. We are proud to have had the opportunity to empower these parents and teachers by providing them with life-changing skills to ensure a continuum of care between the child’s home and school.”

Professor Reyadhsaid:

“Through our work with Al Jalila Foundation in the Ta’alouf programme, Zayed University looks forward to making lasting and significant contributions in all areas that serve individual learning experiences, and broaden and enrich educational practices catering to student’s needs.”

Sponsored by Total, and in partnership with the Ministry of Education and the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, the event was held at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Academic Medical Centre, in Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC), and attended by 330 Emirati students aged 11-13 from 21 schools across the UAE.Catering for the event was provided by Abela& Co.

The children participated in a number of workshops and medical experience activities across a range of specialties including first aid, sports medicine, nursing, and medical robotics, provided by experts includingSANID(the National Emergency Response Volunteer Programme in Abu Dhabi), Dubai Ambulance, Amana Healthcare, Tamkeen and the Ministry of Health.

The children also had the opportunity to interact first-hand with medical students from UAE University to learn more about the challenges and rewards of studying medicine, and heard about healthcare in the army from the UAE Army Medic Station.

Al Jalila Foundation, a global philanthropic organisation dedicated to transforming lives through medical education and research, has today signed an agreement with Brest Friends, the only breast cancer support group in Dubai. The agreement aims to tackle the issues of breast cancer in the UAE through raising awareness, fund research and support treatment of patients.

A study by Dr David Spiegel, Willson Professor and Associate Chair of Psychiatry & Behavioural SciencesMedical Director at the Stanford University School of Medicine, reported that group therapy helped women with breast cancer as well as their surroundings to cope with battling the diseaseand prolonging theirlives. Through educating, providing comfort, teaching coping skills, and financial backing, support groups have proven to help reduce anxiety and depression in turn,enhancing the quality of life of the patients.

Together, Al Jalila Foundation and Brest Friends aim to raise funds for breast cancer treatment and research in the UAE and to further increase awareness on the disease. Al Jalila Foundation will allocate 70 percent of the funds raised towards treatmentthrough the A’awen (support in Arabic) programme, which provides financial aid to UAE-based patients suffering from various illnesses, including breast cancer. The remaining 30 percent will be invested in building medical research capacity in the UAEnecessary for tackling the disease; funds will be channelled through the UAE’s first independent multi-disciplinary medical research centre, Al Jalila Foundation Research Centre. Expected to open in 2016, the Centre will conduct biomedical research, with a focus on prevention and education on the health issuesprevalent in the UAE, including breast cancer.

Studies have shown that women living in the UAE are significantly more susceptible to breast cancer than in the west and at a younger age; having said that, very little research on this issue is done locally – instead, we are obliged to rely on resourcing from abroad, a considerably more costly option. With Al Jalila Foundation’s mission to encourage home-grown talent and research in the UAE, this partnership will serve as a catalyst to our mission of saving lives.”

Through seminars and workshops, Al Jalila Foundation and Brest friends will provide a platform for raising awareness on breast cancer and women’s need for support and friendship during treatment. Patients and families will participate in education workshops on provision of emotional guidance, early detection of the

disease through teaching self-examination techniques, and how to cope with the treatment process.

Dr Houriya Kazim, President and Founder of Brest Friends, commented:

“Dealing with cancer is one of the hardest challenges that patients and their families could face; it is a human need to be nurtured, especially when faced with significant life challenges. Brest Friends aims to be that nurturing support to minimise the psychological side effects of coping with the disease. Whether the stress roots from the lack of awareness on the disease, emotional strain of the treatment or financial struggle, working with Al Jalila Foundation will help us support these patients in having a brighter outlook on their futures and ultimately saving lives.”

Brest Friends was established 10 years ago by Emirati Dr Houriya Kazim, the UAE’s first female surgeon and most recognized authority on breast cancer in the country. The breast cancer support group was initially aimed at raising money for education and awareness and has today grown to also provide financial support to patients in need.

According to the World Health Organisation 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. In the UAE, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, with the number of cases having increased by around 20 percent since 2009. The chances of survival are between 95-100 percent if detected early, however this reduces to 86 percent if detected at stage 2, and becomes 57 percent only at stage 3.
